What is “No Tourist Japan”?

If you want to travel through Japan in peace, without tourists and to traditional places, this is your guide.

No Tourist Japan is a blog dedicated to those who want to explore Japan away from the tourist-saturated sites. Here we offer you a unique guide, focused on showing you traditional and hidden places, which maintain their original charm and allow a calmer and more traditional experience. Our goal is to help you discover a Japan that few know, full of history, culture and landscapes that do not appear in conventional guides.

Each of the places we show has been selected for its tradition and tranquility. Whether it is a small town where time seems to have stopped, a temple lost in the mountains or a historic neighborhood with almost deserted streets, we guarantee you a different experience. In addition, we do not only cover traditional tourist destinations, but we also include recommendations of local shops, food markets, cafes and restaurants where the Japanese themselves enjoy their daily life, away from the crowds.

How to get there and what to expect

At No Tourist Japan we don’t just tell you which places to visit, we also offer practical information to make your trip as comfortable and easy as possible. In each recommendation, we tell you how to get there using the main means of transport: whether by train, subway, bus or even the Shinkansen (bullet train). We detail how long it will take you to get there from the main cities.

We also inform you about the level of tourist influx in each place. Some destinations are practically unknown to international travelers, while others may have some tourist presence, but still maintain a relaxed atmosphere. This way, you can plan your trip in advance and choose the places that best suit what you are looking for: peace, history or a bit of both.

Discover local shops and spots

One of Japan’s biggest draws is its culinary culture and shopping, but at No Tourist Japan we focus on those shops and restaurants that are off the radar of the average tourist. Here you’ll discover small family-run businesses, local markets, street food stalls and charming cafes, where you can try traditional dishes that are a true gastronomic secret.

In our posts, we highlight those places where the Japanese themselves shop, eat and enjoy their free time. Whether you’re looking for a good ramen, a local dessert or a typical craft shop, our recommendations will take you to those hidden spots, so you can live a truly authentic experience.

Our recommendation system: NTRanking

It’s always difficult to find a place you like among so many places. That’s why at NoTouristJapan we have a point-based recommendation system. The higher a place’s NTRanking score, the less likely you are to find people from outside Japan… and if it’s too high, even no Japanese at all.
