Tottori > Mitokusan Temple (三徳山): The Hanging Temple of more than a thousand years

※Description:

三徳山の投入堂: The Hanging Temple of Mitokusan, a National Treasure in Tottori

On the mountain of Mitokusan (三徳山), stands one of the most impressive and oldest temples in Japan, the Nageiredo Temple (投入堂). With more than a thousand years of history, this sacred place, designated as a National Treasure (国宝), defies gravity and architectural logic by being built on the edge of a cliff at an altitude of 899.9 meters. Its history dates back to the Heian period (794-1185) and its name, meaning “thrown temple,” comes from the legend that it was placed on the cliff by the gods themselves, creating a place of veneration and wonder that has endured through the centuries. It is a symbol of spirituality and adventure, attracting visitors seeking an authentic and unique experience.

Access to Nageiredo begins at the Sanbutsu-ji temple (三佛寺), located at the foot of the mountain. This temple, also ancient and full of history, is the starting point for pilgrims and visitors who wish to climb to the Hanging Temple. Sanbutsu-ji, surrounded by a serene and spiritual environment, offers a preview of the beauty and mysticism that will be found on the climb. This temple features several Buddhist pavilions and statues, and is an ideal place to take a break and prepare for the journey.

The trail to Nageiredo Temple is steep and rocky, with the hike taking up to an hour depending on your pace and fitness level. It is important to wear appropriate footwear, as the terrain is uneven and can be slippery in some areas. The climb, though challenging, is worth every effort: as you ascend, visitors pass through lush forests and areas with spectacular views that capture the majesty of the mountain. This tour should be planned ahead of time, as access to Nageiredo closes at 4:30 p.m.

Mitokusan is surrounded by a region rich in nature and tranquility, ideal for disconnecting from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoying the authentic Japanese spirit. The area has numerous viewing points that offer panoramic views, not only of the mountains, but also of the river that meanders through the valley. It is an idyllic setting, where the sounds of nature, such as running water and birdsong, accompany the journey to the temple. Visitors looking for an escape into nature will find Mitokusan a perfect place to appreciate the spirituality and serenity of rural Japan.

For those who wish to climb quietly, the nearby Misasa Onsen (三朝温泉) region offers accommodation options. This area features several ryokans and hot spring onsens where you can relax after visiting Mitokusan. Misasa Onsen, just a few minutes away by bus, is known for its mineral-rich baths, ideal for relaxing after a hike.
