Shiga > Ogoto Onsen (おごと温泉): A hot spring with views of the entire lake of Biwako

※Description:
Ogoto Onsen (おごと温泉), located in Shiga Prefecture next to the famous Lake Biwa (琵琶湖), is one of the region’s most popular hot spring destinations and an excellent choice for those looking to enjoy a thermal bath with spectacular views. The area has been known for over a thousand years for its quality hot spring waters, which are rich in minerals that help relieve fatigue, muscle tension and improve overall health. One of the key points of Ogoto Onsen is its peaceful and picturesque setting, allowing visitors to completely relax.
Within Ogoto Onsen, the ryokan Yumotokan (湯元館) stands out for its luxurious facilities and its spectacular rotenburo (露天風呂) or open-air baths. Although Yumotokan is a traditional accommodation, it offers the option of enjoying its hot springs without having to stay there. For approximately 2,000 yen, visitors can access the bathing facilities and enjoy an unparalleled relaxation experience, ideal for those who want a quick and revitalizing break in an exclusive setting.
Yumotokan has two rotenburo that offer incomparable views. One of these open-air baths is located on the 11th floor of the ryokan, and from here bathers can look out over the majestic Lake Biwa while enjoying the hot springs. This location elevates the onsen experience to the next level, with a panoramic view that encompasses the lake and surrounding mountains. Soaking in the hot water while watching the sunset over the lake is a unique experience that combines the serenity of nature with the comfort of luxury accommodation.
The other rotenburo, located on a lower floor, is surrounded by a beautiful Japanese garden. Here, the atmosphere is more intimate and allows for a closer connection with nature. Both baths offer the opportunity to enjoy hot springs in a totally relaxing environment and in contact with the natural beauty of Shiga.
In addition to the open-air baths, Yumotokan offers indoor baths with different features, all supplied with the same healing waters that have made Ogoto Onsen famous. The Yumotokan experience is suitable for those looking for a day of relaxation as well as those who want to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan. The tranquility of the place, coupled with the comforts of its facilities, makes this destination an excellent choice for those looking to escape the pace of the city and enjoy onsen culture in a spectacular setting.
There are several ryokan and hot springs in the Ogoto Onsen area, each with its own charm and services. One of the best known is the Spa Resort Ogoto Agaryanse (スパリゾート雄琴 あがりゃんせ), which stands out for its extensive facilities and relaxed atmosphere. However, this place tends to receive more visitors and can be a bit busier than other ryokan in the area. While Yumotokan offers a more intimate experience, there are plenty of hot spring bath options at Ogoto Onsen, perfect for enjoying the diversity of healing waters and the unique atmosphere of Shiga.
