This natural corridor is located on the road that runs through the Makino Picland (マキノピックランド) agricultural park, serving as the main route to the Makino Kōgen Plateau (マキノ高原).
The trees were planted in 1981 as part of a community project to beautify the area and promote local agriculture. Their name comes from the word “metasequoia,” a genus of deciduous trees native to China that reach impressive heights and are reminiscent of the famous redwoods of America. Thanks to the efforts and dedication of the local community, the avenue has grown to become an iconic destination, recognized in 1994 as one of “Japan’s New Grove Landscapes” by the Yomiuri newspaper.
