Kyoto > Yokokuji Temple (楊谷寺): A hidden temple with healing water near Kyoto

※Description:

Located in the tranquil mountains of Nagaokakyo (長岡京) in Kyoto, Yokokuji Temple (楊谷寺) is a spiritual and mystical shrine known not only for its peaceful surroundings but also for its unique features. Surrounded by thick forest and a serene atmosphere, Yokokuji offers a completely different experience to the more well-known and crowded temples in Kyoto. Famous for its “eye-healing water,” this place is ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in the spirituality and nature of Japan, away from mass tourism.

One of the main attractions of the temple is its sacred water, known for its supposed healing properties for the eyes. Visitors come here to drink from this spring and wash their faces in search of good eye health, following a tradition that dates back centuries. Furthermore, the mountain area creates a particularly mystical atmosphere, offering visitors an almost absolute peace that allows them to connect with nature and the spirituality of the place.

During the spring and autumn seasons, Yokokuji comes alive in a unique way. During the hydrangea season (紫陽花, ajisai) that occurs in May and June, the temple gardens are covered in flowers in shades of lilac and blue, while in autumn the maple trees (紅葉, momiji) display a vibrant show of reds and oranges. Although these events attract many Japanese visitors, the temple remains a place rarely frequented by foreign tourists, which allows for a more authentic and traditional experience.

Another special attraction of Yokokuji is the tea ceremony, which takes place in one of its traditional rooms overlooking the beautiful garden. Participating in this ceremony allows you to experience an ancient Japanese ritual, where green tea is served alongside traditional sweets (和菓子, wagashi) made from local ingredients. These sweets, in addition to accompanying the tea, represent the essence of each season with their unique shapes and colors.

Among the surprising details of the temple is a mysterious stone located in a corner of the garden. When pouring water on it, visitors can hear a delicate sound emanating from underground, as if small bells were ringing inside. This curious experience is known as the “suikinkutsu” (水琴窟), a kind of “water bell cave” that is traditional in some Japanese gardens. This unique detail creates a magical and silent atmosphere, inviting reflection and wonder.

The temizuya (手水舎) purification fountains, especially decorated during festive times, are another of Yokokuji’s charms. With floral arrangements embellishing the fountains, this place becomes photogenic and special during the spring and autumn seasons, giving visitors an unparalleled visual experience.

※NTRanking:   8.5 / 10

Since it is located in the mountains, it is not very well known outside of Japan. Although it is close to Kyoto and can be reached by trains on the Hankyu and JR lines in less than 30 minutes, there are few or no tourists from outside of Japan.

If you don’t want any tourists around so you can take unique photos, we recommend a weekday and non-holiday season.
