Kyoto > Komyoji Temple (光明寺): Stunning red leaves near Kyoto

※Description:

The Kōmyō-ji temple (光明寺), located in the city of Nagaokakyo (長岡京市), is a must-see destination for lovers of autumn landscapes. This Buddhist temple is known for offering one of the most stunning red leaf displays in the Kansai (関西) area, along with Eikan-dō Temple (永観堂) in Kyoto and Mount Yoshino (吉野山) in Nara, making it one of the top three places to enjoy momiji (紅葉), the natural spectacle of leaves changing color in autumn.

Every year, especially in November, the temple receives a large influx of visitors attracted by the “maple tunnel” that covers the entrance path. As the leaves change, the path transforms into a vibrant mix of red, orange and yellow hues that, together with the temple’s traditional architecture, creates a landscape worthy of being photographed. This tunnel of maple trees, also called Momiji Sando (もみじ参道), is one of the main attractions of Kōmyō-ji and is illuminated in the evening, offering a unique and almost magical atmosphere.

However, outside of the Momiji season, the temple becomes a haven of peace. With fewer visitors, you can stroll around quietly and enjoy the serenity of the gardens and pavilions, immersing yourself in the calm and spirituality of the place. The traditional architecture of the temple, surrounded by nature, provides an authentic and peaceful experience that allows you to enjoy the Japanese essence without the hustle and bustle of tourism.

Kōmyō-ji is also known for its meditation areas and the green spaces that surround it. These gardens are maintained throughout the year, and although they do not have the same fame as the autumn spectacle, they offer a peaceful environment ideal for those who wish to relax and connect with nature in any season.

※NTRanking:   7.5 / 10

During the momiji season, the place is packed with local visitors drawn by the beautiful autumn scenery, although it is rare to find foreign tourists.

If you prefer a quieter visit, the times outside of autumn are ideal, as there are usually very few people at that time, especially during the week. In addition, its proximity to Kyoto and Osaka makes it an accessible destination, perfect for a quick getaway without having to travel long distances.
