Gifu > Gifu Castle (岐阜城): The castle on the top of the mountain.

※Description:

Gifu Castle (Gifu-jō, 岐阜城) is one of Japan’s most iconic castles, known for both its imposing location atop Mount Kinka (Kinka-san, 金華山) and its rich history. Situated 329 meters above sea level, this castle offers spectacular views that encompass not only the city of Gifu, but also distant Nagoya (名古屋) and, on clear days, the mountains of the Japanese Alps.

History of a samurai emblem

Originally built in the 13th century, the castle rose to fame during the Sengoku period under the rule of Oda Nobunaga (織田信長), who made it his headquarters in 1567. From here, Nobunaga dreamed of the unification of Japan, making the castle a symbol of his ambition and power. Although the current structure is a modern reconstruction, it houses a museum with historical artifacts, including armor, weapons, and ancient maps.

The adventure to get there

To reach the top of Mount Kinka, you can enjoy a scenic ride on the Mount Kinka Ropeway (金華山ロープウェイ), which takes visitors up to the castle in just a few minutes. From there, a short path leads to the entrance, offering an immersive experience surrounded by nature.

A breathtaking view

The castle’s observation deck is one of its main attractions. From here, visitors can take in a panoramic view that encompasses rivers, cities and mountains, providing a unique perspective of the Chūbu region.

In the surroundings of the castle there is a theme park with squirrels and animals, which can be fed and enjoyed.

Gifu Castle is more than just a sightseeing tour; it is a journey through time and a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of one of Japan’s greatest leaders.

※NTRanking:   6.0 / 10

Gifu Castle (Gifu-jō, 岐阜城) stands out as a destination known primarily to domestic tourists, while its presence among international visitors is more limited. While its history and location atop Mount Kinka are impressive, its relative lack of promotion in overseas markets and reliance on the cable car to get there may make it less accessible to some travelers. This rating reflects its moderate popularity outside of Japan, but it remains a fascinating spot for those looking to immerse themselves in history and enjoy unique panoramic views.

※How to Get There:

・From Nagoya (about 1 hour):
  1. Take the JR Tokaido Line from Nagoya Station (名古屋駅).

  2. Get off at Gifu Station (岐阜駅), a ride on the rapid train that takes about 20 minutes.

  3. From Gifu Station, take a bus bound for Gifu Park (岐阜公園), which will take about 15 minutes.

  4. At the park, board the rope railway that will take you to Gifu Castle at the top of Mt. Kinka.
