Fukui > Echizen Onojo (越前大野城): The Castle in the Clouds

※Description:
In the mountainous region of Fukui Prefecture (福井県), Echizen Onojo Castle (越前大野城) sits atop Mount Kameyama (亀山), at an altitude of 249 meters, in the heart of the city of Ono (大野市). Surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Ono Valley, this castle is famous for a unique phenomenon that transforms it into the “Castle in the Clouds” (天空の城).
On foggy days between October and late April, especially at dawn, a thick layer of fog covers the city surrounding the castle. From certain vantage points, it appears as if Echizen Onojo is floating on a sea of clouds, creating a spectacular sight that attracts photographers and travelers from all over Japan. This phenomenon requires specific conditions: high humidity, large temperature differences between day and night, and little wind.
Echizen Onojo Castle (越前大野城) was built in 1576, one year before the construction of the famous Azuchi Castle, by Nagachika Kanamori (金森長近) under the orders of Oda Nobunaga (織田信長). Inside, numerous objects related to the former lords of the castle are displayed, offering a fascinating insight into history and life during the Sengoku period.
The castle was built in the 16th century and has been carefully restored, maintaining its connection with the natural environment and history. From its main tower, you can admire the surrounding mountains and the town of Ono, also known as a charming castle town.
Besides enjoying the views, visitors can explore the surrounding area, which offers traditional streets, local restaurants, and historic temples. If you’re looking for a unique and magical experience, plan your visit to catch this mist-shrouded castle, a sight worthy of ancient tales.
※NTRanking: 7.0 / 10
Echizen Onojo (越前大野城) is not a mass tourist destination, making it an ideal place for those seeking a quiet and authentic experience. The town of Ono and its surroundings are not as developed as other tourist areas, limiting direct access by public transport, although it is possible to get there by bus from Fukui. During the foggy season, the castle attracts more visitors, especially photographers and fans of unique landscapes. Outside of this time, the influx is moderate, allowing you to enjoy the site at your leisure. The score reflects its exclusive character and limited access.
