Shiga > Kutsuki Onsen (くつき温泉): The hot springs at the mouth of the Tengu demon

※Description:
Kutsuki Onsen Tenku (くつき温泉 てんくう), located in the mountains of Shiga Prefecture (滋賀), is a special destination for those looking to relax in hot springs surrounded by nature and a touch of Japanese mythology. This onsen is inspired by the mythical tengus (天狗), legendary beings that, according to folklore, inhabit the mountains and possess supernatural powers. Kutsuki Onsen stands out for its unique experience, where visitors can immerse themselves in the hot water inside a large structure shaped like the head of a tengu, allowing them to symbolically enter the mouth of this giant creature. This eye-catching feature makes for an immersive and fun experience, and is a great photo attraction for all ages.
In addition to the quirky tengu bath, the onsen features an indoor pool that is accessible in swimsuits, making it perfect for families and groups who prefer to enjoy the water more casually. However, it is important to note that this pool closes during the months of October through March, coinciding with the coldest weather. Still, the hot spring baths (onsen) remain open year-round, giving visitors the chance to relax in the warm waters even in the dead of winter.
The natural environment surrounding Kutsuki Onsen Tenku is another of its attractions. The mountains of Shiga offer spectacular views, especially in autumn, when the reddish and golden colours of the leaves create a stunning landscape surrounding the onsen. The mineral-rich hot springs are known for their beneficial effects on the skin and for relieving tired muscles, making this place the perfect destination to rest after a day of hiking or exploring the surrounding area.
Kutsuki Onsen Tenku is ideal for those seeking an authentic and relaxing cultural experience in the heart of the mountains of Shiga (滋賀), away from the tourist bustle.
※NTRanking: 8.5 / 10
To enjoy the tranquility of Kutsuki Onsen Tenku and take the best photos without rushing, we recommend visiting on weekdays when there are fewer visitors. This is the best time to explore its facilities and beautiful natural surroundings in peace.
It’s ideal to avoid festive seasons, such as the autumn period when the leaves change colour, as it attracts more local people. If you’re looking for an even more serene atmosphere, the winter months also offer unique scenery and fewer tourist crowds.
