Kagawa > Takaya Jinja Temple (高屋神社): The Shrine of Heaven at the Top of the Mountain

※Description:

In Kagawa Prefecture (香川県), Takaya Jinja Temple (高屋神社) stands as one of the most spectacular destinations in the region. Also known as Inazumi Jinja (稲積神社), this shrine is located atop Mount Inazumi (稲積山), at an altitude of 404 meters. Its fame comes primarily from its iconic Sky Torii (天空の鳥居), an impressive torii gate offering panoramic views of the city of Kan’onji (観音寺市) and the vast Seto Inland Sea (瀬戸内海). This site was selected in 2018 as one of the Shikoku Hachijuhakkei (四国八十八景), a list of the 88 most beautiful landscapes in Shikoku.

A Scenic Trek to the Top

The experience of visiting Takaya Jinja begins from the lower shrine (Shimomiya, 下宮), from where one can take a hike to the main shrine at the top (Honmiya, 本宮). During the climb, visitors pass through a peaceful mountain with scenery including a middle shrine (Chumiya, 中宮) and, with a bit of luck, encounters with local wildlife such as wild hares. The final stretch includes 270 steep steps that culminate at the Honmiya, where the effort is rewarded with dreamlike views.

Along the way, a peculiar rock known as Yurugi Iwa (ゆるぎ岩) stands out, adding a mystical air to the climb. This place is not only ideal for nature lovers, but also for those seeking moments of introspection and connection with Japanese history and spirituality.

History and Festivities

Takaya Jinja is not only a place of natural beauty, but also of deep traditions. During spring, the shrine hosts its annual grand festival (Reitaisai, 例大祭), celebrating the arrival of warm weather with a procession of shrine floats (Chōsa, ちょうさ) amidst cherry blossoms. This festival is unique to Kan’onji and combines beauty and solemnity, attracting locals and visitors alike.
