In Fukui Prefecture (福井県), Tojinbo (東尋坊) is one of three places in the world where you can see the geological formation known as the “pyroxene rock pillars” – a natural phenomenon of pentagonal and hexagonal columns created by volcanic activity and marine erosion. This unique phenomenon is also found on the Korean Peninsula and the west coast of Norway, making Tojinbo a destination of great geological significance.
Tojinbo is not only famous for its geological oddity, but also for the stories surrounding it. According to legend, its name comes from a monk named Tojinbo, who was pushed off these cliffs due to his bad temper. Today, the area is an ideal place to enjoy spectacular views, especially at sunset, and to explore the coast on foot or by boat, admiring the cliffs from the sea.
What to see and do
The cliffs up to 25 metres high combine with the deep blue of the Sea of Japan to create a striking setting. In the surrounding area, small markets and local shops offer fresh seafood, especially crab and other seasonal seafood.

Take the JR Hokuriku Main Line from Fukui Station (福井駅) to Awara Onsen Station (芦原温泉駅), a ride that takes about 15 minutes.
From Awara Onsen Station, take the Keifuku bus bound for Tojinbo (東尋坊). The journey takes about 40 minutes.
・From Kanazawa (about 2 hours):
Take the JR Hokuriku Main Line from Kanazawa Station (金沢駅) to Awara Onsen Station (芦原温泉駅). The journey takes about 50 minutes.
From Awara Onsen Station, take the Keifuku bus bound for Tojinbo (東尋坊). The bus ride takes about 40 minutes.
