In the heart of Gifu Province, the Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum (岐阜関ケ原古戦場記念館) is a place where the history of the famous Battle of Sekigahara (関ヶ原の戦い) comes to life. This confrontation, which occurred on October 21, 1600, marked a turning point in the history of Japan, defining the fate of the nation for centuries.

The battle pitted the troops of the Tokugawa Clan led by Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康) against the forces of the Western Alliance headed by Ishida Mitsunari (石田三成). It was a conflict that sealed Tokugawa Ieyasu’s victory, leading him to become shogun and establish the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years. This clash involved over 150,000 warriors, and its scale and strategy are remembered as a highlight of samurai history.

The museum offers an immersive experience that combines history and technology. In the impressive “Ground Vision”, a huge interactive map projected onto the ground, you can understand the strategy and development of this epic battle. Then, in the 3D cinema, the key moments of the clash are recreated, allowing visitors to feel as if they were right on the battlefield.

For the more adventurous, there are interactive experiences such as a virtual reality (VR) katana duel and the chance to dress in Sengoku-era armour for memorable photos. The permanent exhibition includes original period items such as armour and weapons, as well as information panels that delve deeper into the history of Sekigahara.

From the museum tower, a viewing platform offers panoramic views of the battlefield. Visitors can tour nearby historical sites, marked with monuments, and be transported back almost 500 years, when troops from the most powerful clans fought for the unification of Japan.
