Kagoshima > Takachiho Volcano (高千穂峰): History, legends and hiking

※Description:

Mount Takachiho-no-mine (高千穂峰) is one of the most iconic peaks in the Kyushu (九州) region, located on the border between Kagoshima (鹿児島) and Miyazaki (宮崎) prefectures. This majestic dormant volcano is part of Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park (霧島錦江湾), an area known for its intense volcanic activity and dramatic landscapes shaped by centuries of eruptions. Although the surrounding volcanoes are often active, Mount Takachiho remains dormant, offering visitors a safe experience to explore this unique natural environment.

A Volcano of Stories and Legends

Mount Takachiho-no-mine (高千穂峰) is not only notable for its geology, but also for its rich history and cultural significance. At the summit of the volcano is the Ama-no-Sakahoko (天の逆鉾), a heavenly spear that, according to Japanese mythology, was planted by the gods at this point to mark the divine descent of Ninigi no Mikoto (瓊瓊杵尊), an ancestor of the Japanese emperors. This sacred relic makes the mountain a place of pilgrimage for those interested in the country’s spiritual and mythological roots.

In addition, this site is linked to a peculiar chapter in modern Japanese history. It was here that Sakamoto Ryoma (坂本龍馬), one of the most important figures of the Bakumatsu period, visited during what is considered to be the first honeymoon in Japan. Together with his wife, Oryo (お龍), they enjoyed the sights and wrote about their experience, cementing the place’s romantic reputation.
