Honzan Sankoji (本山三鈷寺): A Hidden Temple with Spectacular Views in Kyoto

High on Mt. Nishiyama (西山), surrounded by nature and tranquility, lies a nearly 1,000-year-old, untouched temple. The historic Honzan Sankoji (本山三鈷寺). Although located near the popular Yoshimine-dera (善峯寺), this lesser-known temple offers unparalleled views and experiences, making it a perfect spot for those seeking peace and spectacular views away from the crowds.

Access to the temple requires a short hike up the mountain. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Kyoto (京都) area, a spectacle that combines the serenity of the mountainous landscape with the majesty of the city stretching out into the distance. This temple not only stands out for its views, but also for its rich history, being a place of deep spirituality and tradition.

One of the most outstanding activities at Honzan Sankoji is the tea ceremony, where you can enjoy exquisite tea and traditional Japanese sweets while taking in the incredible views of the city from above. This experience is a unique combination of Japanese culture, nature and spirituality.

Sankoji dates back to the year 1074 (Jōhō元年 era, Heian period), when the monk Gensan Shōnin (源算上人) built a hermitage on the site. Later, Seizan Shōnin (西山上人) transformed the temple into a dojo for the continued practice of nenbutsu and gave it its current name, Honzan Sankoji (本山三鈷寺).

The name Sankoji comes from the shape of the surrounding mountains, which are reminiscent of the sanko (三鈷), a Buddhist utensil. In addition, the temple’s location offers unique views that have been historically highlighted. In the Edo Era (江戸時代), the site was mentioned in the book Miyakomezu-e” (都名図絵) as one of the best viewing spots in Kyoto, allowing a full view of the Thirty-six Peaks of Higashiyama (東山三十六峰), Mt. Hiei (比叡山), Kyoto city, and the Uji and Kizu areas.

The hike to reach the temple is a journey in itself, surrounded by mountain scenery and a peaceful atmosphere. If you are looking for an authentic experience, far from conventional tourism, Honzan Sankoji (本山三鈷寺) is a hidden gem that awaits you with history, spectacular views and an incomparable atmosphere of peace.
