Kagawa > Oni Demon Island (鬼ヶ島): The Oni Demon Cave

※Description:

In the prefecture of Kagawa (香川県) lies Oni-ga-shima (鬼ヶ島), the famous “Island of the Oni”. This iconic place, whose name literally means “Island of the Demons”, is deeply linked to the legend of Momotaro, the brave hero who, according to the stories, defeated the demons that terrorized the region. A corner where history, nature and culture intertwine in a unique way.

The Great Cave of the Oni

In the heart of Oni-ga-shima lies the Oni-ga-shima Dai-dōkutsu (鬼ヶ島大洞窟), an imposing cave that, according to legend, was the hideout of the fearsome demons. As you enter its dark tunnels, surrounded by carefully recreated oni figures, you can imagine what those mythical times must have been like. The cave, which has been prepared to welcome visitors, has more than 400 meters of passages and rooms that reveal a magical and mysterious atmosphere.

The Island and its Natural Beauty

In addition to the cave, Oni-ga-shima offers white sand beaches perfect for a day of relaxation. Here you can enjoy the calm sea and the views of the Seto Inland Sea (瀬戸内海). The island is also ideal for walking among its serene landscapes, which invite you to relax and unwind. On its shores you will find simple accommodations, ideal for spending the night and enjoying the calm, the stars and the delicious local cuisine, rich in fresh seafood.

The Oni Museum

You can’t miss the Oni Museum (鬼ミュージアム), a place that perfectly complements the experience on the island. Here you will learn more about the legends of the oni, see exhibitions about their representation in Japanese culture and enjoy sculptures and art dedicated to these mythical creatures.

A Unique Experience

Oni-ga-shima is not just an island; it is a journey into Japan’s past, a place where you can explore legends, enjoy natural beauty and immerse yourself in a peaceful environment, away from the tourist bustle. Perfect for lovers of history, culture and relaxation.

Is near the Kotohira-gu (金刀比羅宮) shrine and the Takaya Jinja Temple (高屋神社)

※NTRanking:   6.0 / 10

Oni-ga-shima is an interesting destination, but its relatively easy accessibility from major cities and its connection to the famous legend of Momotaro attract a moderate number of visitors, especially locals. Although it is not crowded with foreign tourists, it is common to find Japanese school groups and families, especially during festive periods or weekends.

However, the tranquility of its beaches and the natural environment of the island still offer moments of calm for those looking to disconnect. In addition, its unique oni theme and cultural touch make it an attractive place for a different experience, but not completely deserted.
